If you're building a life in Chengdu, ignore the tourist framing for a minute. The question isn't how to 'do Sichuan.' It's how to leave the ring road often enough that the city doesn't shrink to your commute.

I tried the heroic itinerary year — stacking famous names because guests expected them. I came home unemployable for three days and still hadn't seen the quiet places that actually reset me.
A rotation that survived contact with work
- Water / engineering awe (Dujiangyan) when you need perspective
- Mountain green (Qingcheng or a lower Emei slice) when you need lungs
- Weird museum day (Sanxingdui) when you need your brain rearranged
- Nothing — a staycation that protects your sleep

Layer one: logistics
Tickets and trains with buffers. Holiday China does not care about your optimism.
Layer two: temperament
Your real energy — not vacation Instagram you. If you're hosting, one highlight per day. If you're alone, leave room to wander without collecting proof.

Layer three: street-level truth
You'll feel it in a countryside morning that resets your whole month — long before you feel it in a ranking blog.
Never leaving the ring road until you burn out is a quiet way to sour on a good city. Put two escapes on the calendar per quarter. Then defend them like meetings.
